VAT calculator for Kenya
Add 16% VAT to a price, or take it out of a VAT-inclusive total. The answer appears as you type, with the VAT amount split out for your invoice.
- Before VAT
- KSh 1,000.00
- VAT at 16%
- KSh 160.00
- Total including VAT
- KSh 1,160.00
Adding VAT: price × 1.16. Removing VAT: total × 16 ÷ 116 gives the VAT part.
How to work out 16% VAT.
Adding VAT to a price
Multiply the price before VAT by 0.16 to get the VAT, then add it on. For KSh 1,000.00, the VAT is KSh 160.00 and the total is KSh 1,160.00. In one step: multiply by 1.16.
Removing VAT from a total
Divide the total by 1.16 to get the price before VAT. For a total of KSh 1,000.00, that is KSh 862.07, so the VAT part is KSh 137.93. Taking 16% off the total gives the wrong answer.
Showing it on the invoice
Clients and tax offices expect three separate lines: the amount before VAT, the VAT with its rate, and the total to pay. Round each line to two decimals and make sure they add up.
Put it on an invoice.
