VAT calculator for South Africa

Add 15% VAT to a price, or take it out of a VAT-inclusive total. The answer appears as you type, with the VAT amount split out for your invoice.

Before VAT
R 1,000.00
VAT at 15%
R 150.00
Total including VAT
R 1,150.00

Adding VAT: price × 1.15. Removing VAT: total × 15 ÷ 115 gives the VAT part.

By hand

How to work out 15% VAT.

01

Adding VAT to a price

Multiply the price before VAT by 0.15 to get the VAT, then add it on. For R 1,000.00, the VAT is R 150.00 and the total is R 1,150.00. In one step: multiply by 1.15.

02

Removing VAT from a total

Divide the total by 1.15 to get the price before VAT. For a total of R 1,000.00, that is R 869.57, so the VAT part is R 130.43. Taking 15% off the total gives the wrong answer.

03

Showing it on the invoice

Clients and tax offices expect three separate lines: the amount before VAT, the VAT with its rate, and the total to pay. Round each line to two decimals and make sure they add up.

Next step

Put it on an invoice.

The free invoice maker adds VAT at 15% for you, shows it as its own line and downloads a clean PDF. No sign-up needed.
